Preheat and Prep:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span class=\"citation-24 citation-end-24\">Preheat your oven to <\/span><span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"350^\\circ\\text{F}\">350 degrees<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Grease and flour a 9-inch square cake pan or an 8-9 inch round cake pan, or line the bottom with parchment paper.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>2. Mix Dry Ingredients:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span class=\"citation-21 citation-end-21\">In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Make sure everything is well combined.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>3. Combine Wet Ingredients:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span class=\"citation-20 citation-end-20\">In a separate bowl or large measuring jug, gently mix together the Fanta, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and apple cider vinegar.\u00a0<\/span>If using, stir in the orange zest.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> The vinegar reacting with the soda may cause a slight fizzing, which is normal. <span class=\"citation-19 citation-end-19\">The acid helps activate the baking soda to leaven the cake.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>4. Combine Wet and Dry:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Stir until <i>just<\/i> combined. Be careful <b>not to overmix<\/b>; a few small lumps are okay. Overmixing develops the gluten and can result in a tougher cake.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>5. Cool:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then carefully transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>7. Prepare Glaze (Optional):<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>In a small bowl, whisk together the sifted powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of Fanta until smooth.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>If the glaze is too thick, add a little more Fanta, a teaspoon at a time. If it&#8217;s too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Once the cake is completely cooled, drizzle the glaze evenly over the top.
