GelatineGelatin-Free Marshmallows
That Toast, Melt & Squish
However you spell it, we never use it. Freedom Mallows are 100% gelatinegelatin-free — whipped from a clever plant-based recipe into the same pillowy, toastable fluff you grew up with.
Do marshmallows contain gelatine?
Traditional marshmallows, almost always — gelatine (an animal by-product made from collagen) is what gives them their bounce. Freedom Mallows contain none. We rebuilt the marshmallow from scratch on a plant-based recipe, so the texture, toast and melt all survive — and the gelatine simply never turns up. That makes every bag vegan, vegetarian, halal certified and kosher & PKU suitable in one go.
What is gelatine, anyway?
Fair warning: once you know, you can’t un-know.
The traditional way
Gelatine is a protein extracted by boiling animal collagen — skins, bones and connective tissue, usually from pigs or cattle. It’s flavourless, sets like a spring, and it’s the reason a classic marshmallow bounces back when you squeeze it.
- Not vegetarian or vegan — it’s an animal by-product
- Rules out halal and kosher diets unless strictly certified
- Hides in sweets, desserts, cereals and even some yoghurts
The Freedom way
We spent years perfecting a plant-based recipe that whips up just as light, sets just as springy and toasts just as golden — with no animal-derived ingredients whatsoever. No gelatine, no compromise, no one left out.
- Suitable for vegans, vegetarians and flexitarian snackers
- Halal certified, kosher & PKU suitable
- Free from the Top 14 allergens, artificial nasties and corn syrup
“But do they actually work?”
The question every gelatine-free sceptic asks. Pick a test — we’ve already run them all.

Gelatine-free FAQs
Are there marshmallows without gelatine?
Yes — you’re looking at them. Freedom Mallows are 100% gelatine-free marshmallows made in the UK. Instead of animal gelatine, we use a plant-based recipe that recreates the classic pillowy texture, toast and melt.
What do you use instead of gelatine?
A carefully developed plant-based recipe — refined over years so the bounce, whip and toastability all behave like the mallows you remember. Every ingredient is listed on the product page and on pack, with nothing animal-derived and no artificial flavours, colours or corn syrup.
Gelatine or gelatin — what’s the difference?
Just spelling! “Gelatine” is the British spelling, “gelatin” the American one — they’re the same animal-derived ingredient. Either way, Freedom Mallows contain none of it, on both sides of the Atlantic (our US friends can shop at freedomconfectionery.com/en-us).
Do gelatine-free marshmallows toast and melt?
Ours do — that was the whole point. They toast golden over a flame, melt into hot chocolate and hold up in s’mores, rocky road and rice-crispy treats. See the test drive section above for the evidence.
Are gelatine-free marshmallows vegan?
Not automatically — some brands swap gelatine for egg white or other animal ingredients. Freedom Mallows are fully vegan: no gelatine, no egg, no dairy, no animal-derived anything.
Are your gelatine-free marshmallows halal and kosher?
They’re independently halal certified and kosher & PKU suitable. Removing gelatine removes the ingredient that causes most of the trouble for both diets.
Can I bake with gelatine-free marshmallows?
Please do. Rocky road, s’mores dip, rice-crispy squares, brownie toppers, cereal treats — our 1kg Biggie Minis bag exists precisely because bakers kept running out. Browse the recipe blog for ideas.
Where can I buy gelatine-free marshmallows?
Order direct from our shop with UK-wide delivery, find us on Amazon UK, or look for Freedom at selected retailers including Ocado and Booths. US shoppers: en-us store.
