Are marshmallows halal?
Most high-street marshmallows are not halal, because they’re set with gelatine — usually from pork, or from beef that hasn’t been halal-slaughtered. Freedom Mallows are different: we make every marshmallow with zero gelatine and zero animal-derived ingredients, and our range is independently halal certified. Same fluff, same toast, same melt — none of the worry.

Why most marshmallows aren’t halal
Three little words on the back of the bag do all the damage. Here’s what to look out for — and how we solved it.
“Gelatine” (usually pork)
Traditional marshmallows get their bounce from gelatine, most commonly derived from pork — which is never halal. It hides in plain sight as just one word on the ingredients list.
“Beef gelatine” ≠ halal
Beef gelatine is only halal when the cattle are slaughtered to halal standards and the supply chain is verified — which most sweet brands can’t demonstrate. Without certification, it’s a guess.
The mystery middle
“Mono- and diglycerides”, unnamed E-numbers, vague “flavourings” — when a label won’t say where things come from, families following halal diets are left doing the detective work.

The three questions we’re asked most, answered in one breath each.
Are vegan marshmallows halal?
Usually a great sign — but not a guarantee. Vegan means no gelatine, which removes the big problem. Certification is what confirms the rest of the recipe and process. Freedom Mallows are both: vegan and independently halal certified.
Are halal marshmallows vegetarian?
Not always. Some halal marshmallows simply swap pork gelatine for halal beef or fish gelatine — still animal-derived. Ours contain no gelatine of any kind, so they’re vegetarian, vegan and halal all at once.
Are kosher marshmallows halal?
Not automatically. Kosher and halal are different standards with different rules — kosher fish gelatine, for example, isn’t everyone’s yes. A plant-based recipe with halal certification, like ours, is the simplest way to tick both boxes.

Are Freedom Confectionery marshmallows halal certified?
Yes. Freedom Mallows and Freedom Gummies are independently halal certified — you’ll see “Halal Certified” in the product names and the mark on pack. Certificates are available on request from askcedric@freedomconfectionery.com.
Why are most marshmallows not halal?

What are halal marshmallows made of instead of gelatine?
Ours use a plant-based recipe — no animal-derived ingredients anywhere — whipped to the same pillowy texture as a traditional mallow. They’re also free from the Top 14 allergens and made without artificial flavours, colours or corn syrup. The full ingredients list is on every product page and pack.
Do halal marshmallows toast and melt like normal ones?
Absolutely. Freedom Mallows toast golden over a flame, melt into hot chocolate and behave beautifully in s’mores, rocky road and rice-crispy treats. If anything, you’ll want to make extra.
Are your halal marshmallows also vegan and vegetarian?
Yes — because we use no gelatine and no animal-derived ingredients, every Freedom Mallow is suitable for vegans and vegetarians as well as being halal certified. One bag really does work for the whole table.
